Internal Wall Insulation, also referred to as Solid Wall Insulation is most suitable for homes constructed from solid stone or brick, especially those built before the 20th century. It is installed on the internal side of exterior walls (the walls that are exposed to the outside elements).

Various materials can be used for internal wall insulation including PIR board, mineral wool, and natural fibre insulation such as wood fibre or sheep's wool. We will assess your property and discuss the best options with you.

Internal Wall Insulation - Scotland wide

Internal Wall Insulation

Different types of Solid Wall builds.

The UK has a lot of old architecture, over 8 million homes are built of Solid Wall construction. and possibly suitable for Solid Wall Insulation. These traditional properties are generally comprised of granite or sandstone. Some Brick or Block homes do not have a space between the 2 layers and are therefore classed as solid wall, these are deal for Internal Wall Insulation.

Internal Wall Insulation Materials

Some of the materials we use for Internal Wall Insulation

We use a variety of insulation products in different situations. Some materials are more suited to different types of buildings, performance or space requirements.

  • PIR board Insulation is often used due to the superb insulation properties. It creates a vapour closed system and can be used attached to plasterboard for overboarding or placed within walls where space or performance is important.
  • Sheep Wool insulation is a premium product and often used in older or listed buildings. As well as good insulation, Sheep wool helps regulate the moisture content of the air around the timbers.
  • Hemp is often used due to its environmental credentials and good insulation properties. We install Hemp which is made in Scotland meaning as well as a natural product, the carbon footprint is smaller than insulation moved over vast distances.
  • Mineral Wool can be used in some circumstances and provides great sound as well as thermal insulation.
  • We can install Wood Fiber Insulation which is great for the environment, good at insulating and can transform the acoustics of a property.

We can advise on suitable materials, the performance and benefits as well as the suitability for your home when we carry out our free survey.

Loft insulation

Stripping back

One way of installing insulation to an internal wall is to strip the wall back to the original granite or sandstone. We would then construct an internal stud wall and insulate the stud wall. This can be done using a variety of materials. From here we would install a layer of plasterboard or insulated plasterboard to provide an additional layer of insulation.

This is ideal for exposing and fixing any hidden problems lying within the woodwork behind the walls.

Over-boarded Internal Wall Insulation

Over-board or independent timber stud walls.

If your walls are solid plaster onto block or brick we would either build a stand alone stud wall or over-board the walls with insulated plasterboard.

If space is not an issue the best solutiuon would be to build a timber stud wall independent of the exterior wall, insulate it and plasterboard.

If space is at a premium we could overboard directly onto the wall using plasterboard combined with PIR Insulation in a variety of thicknesses from 37.5mm to 112.5mm.

Internal Wall Insulation and recreation plasterwork

Worth a thought

  • Depending on how its installed it can slightly reduce the size of a room. It may be possible to strip the walls and utilise the space to minimise intrusion.
  • Listed A & B buildings will need the permission of local authorities before making any changes. We do work with Natural products to maintain the character of traditional buildings.
  • It does require re-decoration of rooms but can be done a room at a time to minimise disruption.
  • Original features such as cornicing and decorative features could be lost depending on where the insulation is applied. However it is possible to recreate plasterwork or woodwork.
  • It should not be installed before any issues with penetrating or rising damp are fixed. We can advise on the best course of action or perhaps repair the issue.

Alternatives to Internal Wall Insulation

Not all properties are suitable for Internal Wall Insulation. If a house has rising damp or rot then this will need treated first. We can inspect, advise and often quote to repair these problems or point you in the right direction.

Some houses are built with cavity walls, in which case cavity wall insulation may be the best option. It is possible to add Internal Wall Insulation on houses which have (or haven't) had cavity wall insulation installed. This would further reduce the heat loss from the house.

More modern Timber Frame houses built between the late 1970's and 2002 may not need Internal Wall Insulation as such, but these houses started off with no insulation and eventually moved on in later years to using 100mm of fiberglass insulation. The insulation in these house can be improved using the existing Timber Framing of the house. It is possible to strip back the plasterboard, remove any glass wool present, install PIR board Insulation (which is around twice as good) and install new plasterboard. This will result in an increase in energy efficiency.

Almost any house can have insulation added to the exterior walls internally, as long as it is done right.
